What are pits and fissures?

You may have noticed that on your back molar teeth, you have grooves that are most of the time stained brown- these are fissures. Sometimes there are stained minuscule holes on the cheek surface of the same back teeth- these are pits.

Why do they concern us?

Sticky foods LOVE these spots! It is a FACT that pit and fissure decay is the most common type of decay seen in the adult dentition.

Fissure sealants help us by preventing sticky foods from reaching these spots they love. They are a very effective method of reducing the risk of decay. Once adult teeth come through, we can protect them with fissure sealants.

The procedure is quick and comfortable. No local anaesthetic is required. The video below is a pretty accurate demo of how it is done at the dentist.
